Game 1 world series
This will be the third-straight season that we’ve gotten extra-innings in Game 1 of the World Series, so don’t we look quite the fool to not have bet on that result. I’m not sure you can actually bet on that result, but if you can, you should in 2025.
It started pretty tight and seemed to be an advantage for hitters early on. But both pitchers have also seemingly found an extra inch (or two) on the right side of the plate. It’s a confusing zone, and worth keeping an eye on as the game goes on.
A gimpy Gibson hit perhaps the most famous walk-off in World Series history in Game 1 of the 1988 Fall Classic, 36 years and 10 days before Freeman’s heroics on Friday. Gibson took Oakland Athletics closer Dennis Eckersley deep on Oct. 15, 1988 to give Los Angeles a 1-0 lead in a series it would eventually win.
Tommy Edman led off the bottom of the sixth with a double, but the top of the order couldn’t bring him home. Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts grounded out and Freddie Freeman flew out to end the inning.
Anyway, Torres was put at second base and not awarded a home run like Jeter in 1996. Judge eventually popped up on the infield to end the inning and strand pinch-runner Oswaldo Cabrera at second base. A non-controversial fan interference call that ultimately didn’t matter on the scoreboard. Not often you see that.
Game 2 world series
Yamamoto actually walked the first batter of the game, but he got through Juan Soto, Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton to leave that runner stranded. He didn’t allow a hit until Soto homered in the third inning, but Yamamoto retired the next 11 batters he faced, striking out Judge to end the sixth inning, then getting Stanton to pop up for the first out of the seventh.
The Los Angeles Dodgers are two wins away from a World Series championship. The Dodgers hung on to beat the New York Yankees in Game 2 of the World Series on Saturday night (LA 4, NY 2), and now have a 2-0 series lead. They were one out away from being down 1-0 in the series Friday night. Then Freddie Freeman hit a walk-off grand slam. Now the Dodgers have a 2-0 series lead, albeit with an injured Shohei Ohtani. Game 3 is Monday at Yankee Stadium.
With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Yankees manager Aaron Boone is making a pitching change. Jake Cousins has taken over for Carlos Rodón after Rodón surrendered six hits and four runs over 3.1 innings of work.
You have to go back to 1996 for the last time a team erased a 2-0 series deficit to win the World Series. That team? The Yankees. They came back to beat the Braves in that Fall Classic for the first of their four championships from 1996-2000. New York will have to hope that comeback ability is in their organizational DNA. The Dodgers won an instant classic in Game 1 and were able to avoid disaster in the ninth inning of Game 2.
